Roofing in the Eastern Suburbs

The Eastern Suburbs run from the flat post-war streets of Payneham and Campbelltown up into the foothills at Burnside, Glen Osmond, Magill and Athelstone. Big blocks, old trees, a century of terracotta and concrete tile roofs, and more wind and storm exposure than the plain make this the busiest region for tile repairs and ridge repointing.

The eastern suburbs run from the flat ground around Payneham and Campbelltown up into the foothills at Burnside, Glen Osmond, Magill and Athelstone. Housing spans a century: 1920s bungalows under terracotta tiles near Norwood Parade and Glen Osmond Road, 1950s and 60s cream brick homes under terracotta or early concrete tiles across Campbelltown and Magill, and 1970s to 90s brick veneer under concrete tiles climbing the slopes toward the Hills face. Blocks are larger here and the trees are old, so gutters fill with leaf litter and branches come down in storms. The foothills catch more wind than the plain, gusty northerlies ahead of a change lift ridge capping and loose tiles, and the higher ground sees a little more rain. Under it all is reactive clay that swells through winter and shrinks through summer, cracking rigid cement mortar on ridges and hips and opening gaps at flashings. Terracotta tiles have outlasted their mortar; concrete tiles from the 1960s are now porous and holding moss.
