The western and coastal suburbs take in Glenelg, Henley Beach, Grange, Findon, Semaphore and Port Adelaide, running along Gulf St Vincent and a few kilometres inland. Roofs here age faster than anywhere else in Adelaide because salt corrodes metal sheeting, gutters, valleys and screws, and the south-westerly fronts arrive straight off the water with nothing to slow them down.

The western and coastal suburbs run from Glenelg north along Gulf St Vincent through Henley Beach, Grange and Semaphore to Port Adelaide, with Findon a few kilometres inland. Salt air is the defining problem. Galvanised and older Colorbond roofs, gutters, valleys and screws corrode faster here than anywhere else in Adelaide, and fasteners lose their coating within a few years of exposure. The housing runs from Victorian cottages and 1920s bungalows under corrugated iron and terracotta tiles, through 1950s to 70s brick homes under concrete tiles, to a wave of knock-down rebuilds, townhouses and apartments with Colorbond, box gutters and membrane roofs. The sandy soil is stable, so footing movement matters less than on the clay plains, but the south-westerly fronts arrive straight off the water and lift anything loose. Port Adelaide and Semaphore add heritage constraints on iron roofs, parapets and box gutters, where repairs have to match the original profile and detailing.
